Ideas for a family day out

September 14, 2023

Discover and find enrichment with these quality events and ideas, which you can find near you or even participate locally.

1. Spend the day at a zoo!

Why go?  A zoo is the perfect way to spend the day as a family. Everyone can find something to enjoy at the zoo. It creates a magical outing and the everlasting memory of this visit will forever have a positive effect on your child. Visiting a zoo lets you see a variety of wonderful animals all in the same place. As your children adventure around they are exposed to words and concepts, which encourages dialogue between parents and children. A zoo is a place where children are exposed to new words, concepts, and awareness of the world

2. Watching a movie at the cinema!

Why go? Movies can help develop children's cognitive skills, such as forming long-term memory, maintaining focus, developing logic, reasoning, visual and auditory processes. Movies bring up conversation scenes that can help introduce children to a lot of vocabulary and pronunciation. Research also shows that watching TV and movies with your kids, also called "co-viewing," has a range of positive effects, such as supporting early literacy skills, boost empathy.

3. Playing in a public park

Why go? Public playgrounds provide many learning opportunities through different types of play. Outdoor play allows; physical, social, emotional, imaginative and cognitive development. Exercise improves health and well-being while the safe environment encourages independence. A local playground is a wonderful way for parents to introduce young children to playground equipment and new friends. It is amazing watching a child progress from being supervised, to climbing up a play tower. Playgrounds allow children to challenge themselves in safety which also improves confidence.

4. Picnic in the Park:

Why go? Pack a picnic basket with your family's favorite snacks and sandwiches, bring along a blanket, and spend the day at a local park. You can play Frisbee, soccer, or just relax and enjoy nature. Going on a picnic allows your family to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. You can sit together, chat, and bond over a meal in a serene natural setting.

5. Nature Hike:

Why go? Explore a nearby nature trail or hiking path. It's a fantastic way to connect with nature and teach your kids about the environment. Make sure to wear appropriate clothing and bring plenty of water. By engaging in nature hikes, you're promoting a healthy and active lifestyle for your family. It sets a positive example for your kids to embrace physical activity as a part of their routine.
