Mobile phones face being banned from every school in England

NSBLG-2431

The government has moved ahead with a pledge to ban mobile phones in schools.

The Department for Education has today published guidance which will ensure consistency in classrooms across England.

Last year, at the Tory Party conference in October, education secretary Gillian Keegan pledged to bring forward changes forbidding mobile phone use in schools.

Recent research showed 29% of secondary school pupils had seen mobile phones being used when they weren't supposed to.

The new guidance says that schools should prohibit the use of mobile phones, but they will have autonomy on how to do this.

Some may allow phones to be brought onto the premises but not to be used during school hours, including at breaktime.

This brings England in line with other countries who have put in place similar rules, including France, Italy and Portugal.
