Summer activities ... and all you need is a box!

'Out of the box' activities are cheap and keep children amused for hours!

There is no right or wrong way to play with a box! Give your child the box and follow their lead. If they need help getting started, model some ideas. Try making a tunnel, sit inside, draw on it, or make a car.

What do I need?

  1. Cardboard boxes of different sizes.
  2. Pens, pencils, crayons, sticky tape, stickers, paints, etc.
  3. Paper plates make good steering wheels.
  4. Fabric, cushions, blankets, and pillows help to make a box cozy!

Musical Statues!

Check your child understand the difference between moving and staying still.  You can show them and see if they can copy you. Use the words ”stop” and ”go”. Play some music. Move around and then say “STOP”! Everyone has to freeze like a statue. Start the music again and repeat!

Fine Motor Box!

Fill up a box (it can be any size) with some fine motor materials or activities. Have a look below for some ideas:

  • Spend around 5-10 minutes playing with activities in the fine motor box.
  • Use a timer to help structure and transition between activities. Different
  • Different textures - coins & pebbles, putty & dough, pegs & tweezers, and toys and objects

Get Creative! Offer real-life opportunities to develop fine motor skills. Use your child's interests to encourage engagement.

Build a fort!

Find materials and equipment around the house that you can make a den or a fort with.

You can keep it up over the summer holiday as a ”cool down” or “safe space” for your child to use.
