Your child's mental health matters!

Mental Health is becoming more and more of a problem especially in children and young people, 75% of children and young people are not getting the help they need. Some surveys say that more children and young people have problems with their mental health compared to 30 years ago.


Children's mental health is important as it helps them to develop the resilience to deal with problems that life throws at them and grow into healthy adults.

Mental health problems in children

Traumatic events can trigger mental problems such as:

  • Moving home
  • New baby
  • Transitioning in schools 
  • Neglect 
  • Deceased relatives or loved ones

Signs in children

These are major signs in your children that you as a parent should look out for:

  • A change in character 
  • An increase/decrease in appetite
  • Sadness or a low mood that does not go away
  • Being irritable or grumpy all the time
  • Not being interested in things they used to enjoy
  • Feeling tired and exhausted a lot of the time
  • They isolate themselves more 
  • Attachment issues

  • How to support my child's mental health: 
  • Make sure your child is eating a balanced diet.
  • Get regular exercise.
  • Taking part in clubs/events
  • Family time.
  • Spending time with friends.
  • Talking to them about their feelings/ emotions.
  • Support from schools/ teachers etc.
  • Limited screen time ( social media- this has a massive impact on developments and a child's mental health)
  • Play with your child/ strengthen your bond with them

You have to understand and listen to your child in order for them to feel safe, trusted, loved, and understood, these are also ways to grow a good relationship with your child for them to develop, talk and understand their feelings.


Remember to not worry if your child is struggling with the transition, this is completely normal. As time passes, it will get easier as they settle into their new environment.  

Children's mental health express yourself activities:

A great way to get your child to express themselves without just talking in through self-expression examples of this are:

  • Singing.
  • Dancing.
  • Painting.
  • Sporting activities. 
  • Journaling/ writing.
  • Art.
  • Photography.

It is about finding a way to show who you are, and how you see the world, that can help you feel good about yourself.
