‘Start for Life’ support package to be launched for new parents.

April 2021

A new ‘Start for Life’ support package for new parents has been launched as part of the early years review. The package starts with the needs of the baby and describes six action areas designed to make parents aware of local services and turning family hubs into ‘start for life’ services.

  • ·       Seamless support for families: a coherent joined-up Start for Life offer available to all families
  • ·       A welcoming hub for families: family hubs as a place for families to access Start for Life services
  • ·       The information families need when they need it: designing digital, virtual and telephone offers around the needs of the family
  • ·       An empowered Start for Life workforce: developing a modern skilled workforce to meet the changing needs of families
  • ·   Continually improving the Start for Life offer: improving data, evaluation, outcomes and proportionate inspection
  • ·       Leadership for change: ensuring local and national accountability and building the economic case

Led by Early Years Health Adviser, Andrea Leadsom, ‘The best start for life: a vision for the 1,001 critical days’ review sets out a vision for improving babies’ healthy development and reducing inequalities in the first 1,001 days of life.

As part of the review, the government plans to digitise the ‘red book’, which contains babies’ health details and information about their growth and development to make sure families have all the information they need and to access their children’s data and easily share it with appropriate professionals. Digitising it will ensure information is easier to store, protect it from being lost and make it easier to share with medical staff. This will apply to every new birth from April 2023, bringing it forward a year.

The chair of the Early Years Healthy Development Review, Andrea Leadsom commented - “The six action areas will have a transformational impact on our society, and I am looking forward to the implementation phase of the review where we will continue to work closely with families and the early years sector. I am confident that delivering this vision will help millions of families to give their baby the very best start for life.”
