Overview

Coco is a creative and adventurous little black girl with a head full of coils and kinks. In this charming tale, she discovers the amazing versatility and excitement of having a mane of natural hair. Twists, curls, colour…so many choices but how will she decide which style to wear each day?

Coco loves her curly hair is an enchanting celebration of the countless possibilities, wonder and magic of afro hair. At its heart, it celebrates black hair as beauty - not burden - and unfolds the joy of embracing all that you are.

With the book’s bold hues and warm tones, representation never looked so good. Each page is crowned with the grandeur, glory and detail of kinks and curls that are often missed out in children’s books.

The strong visuals combine charming illustrations and unbounded optimism to bring Coco and her hair to life. Extra attention has been taken to the caramel and chocolate hues of melanin as well as afro hair.

In soft lines and compelling colour, the artwork underscores the core message of the book; that nothing is more beautiful than being yourself.

The book is a fist-bump and high-five to little black naturalista’s everywhere. Coco’s story is an overdue ode to black girls hoping to find a way to be themselves.

Books play an important role in shaping children’s lives : these stories and characters will affect how they see themselves and the world around them, their motivation to read, and their aspirations to become authors and illustrators of the future.
