Overview

Create Learning Primary is a specialist service offering a nurturing and therapeutic learning environment for children aged 7-11 with challenges that are a barrier to their learning in a mainstream or alternative provision. It uses a ‘Nurture’ approach to education to support younger children.

This service supports pupils in Key Stage 2 (aged 7-11) who are likely to have at least one of the following complex needs:

Experiences of relational/developmental trauma or attachment difficulties.

A diagnosed neurodevelopmental condition, for example: Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

Sensory processing difficulties.

A diagnosed mental health condition, for example Anxiety or Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD).

The Nurture Approach

Create Learning Primary is underpinned by Six Principles of Nurture:

Learning is understood developmentally.

The classroom offers a safe base.

The importance of nurture for the development of well-being.

Language is a vital means of communication.

All behaviour is communication.

The importance of transitions in children’s lives.

Create Learning Primary is a variation on the classic Nurture group model, providing a happy, safe and secure learning environment where pupils feel valued and respected.

A holistic curriculum is delivered to small classes of up to five pupils. Teachers are supported by Therapeutic Education Practitioners (TEP).

As well as our rigorous TCES training programme, all staff receive targeted training from NurtureUK which includes an understanding of attachment theory and its impact on teaching practice and developing strategies to support pupils with social, emotional, sensory and mental health needs.

Benefits of the nurture approach

“The nurturing approach offers a range of opportunities for children and young people to engage with missing early nurturing experiences, giving them the social and emotional skills to do well at school and with peers, develop their resilience and their capacity to deal more confidently with the trials and tribulations of life, for life.” — NurtureUK

A nurturing approach supports better emotional regulation in pupils, improving their cognitive functioning and ability to learn. Pupils begin to understand the importance of positive relationships and how to work and play together cooperatively. As their confidence develops, they learn how to speak in a group and express their ideas and make positive choices.
