Tormead School

Cranley Road , Guildford , Surrey , GU1 2JD

Welcome to Tormead, one of the leading UK independent schools for girls.

We are very proud of our school and its ethos of encouraging each individual girl to develop her talents to the full in a happy and caring school. Our vision is to provide an excellent, all-round education in a warm, stimulating and supportive environment.

A Tormead education is one of academic excellence, outstanding pastoral care and a wealth of extra-curricular opportunities and enrichment. We pride ourselves on nurturing flexibility of thought and resilience in our girls, both key dispositions for future-proofing them in a world where traditional professions will be disrupted by the impact of AI and robotics.

Our commitment to academic excellence is evident in a strong track record in public examinations: a testament to our girls, our teaching staff and the whole school community. The hugely impressive results speak for themselves:
In 2020, 69% of all A Level grades were an A* or A, rising from 67% in 2019.In 2020, 86% of all GCSE grades awarded were grade 9-7.

Tormead values individuality, celebrates diversity and encourages girls to be themselves, whilst emphasising equally the value of tolerance, teamwork and collective responsibility. We aim to instil a sense that they are members of a caring and outward-looking community and we measure the value of our education, not only by the standards of examination results and university destinations, but by the happiness of our pupils, the strength of our community and the success of our old girls as they chart their course beyond Tormead’s gates.

Our facilities for learning are first-rate, such as our beautifully constructed main teaching block, Atrium and Sixth Form centre; harder to see is our wireless network, which has allowed us to introduce iPads into lessons as part of our digital strategy as an Apple Distinguished School.

However, all the research shows that the most important factor in education is the quality of teaching. At Tormead, our girls enjoy inspirational and scholarly lessons, delivered by a well-qualified, talented, and caring staff – in small class settings which allow every individual to flourish to their full potential.

Former Head Girl, Eilidh Bass, Guest of Honour at Upper Sixth Prize Giving [Link]
Last week, Tormead celebrated the efforts and achievements of our fabulous Upper Sixth girls at a Prize Giving afternoon, where the speaker and guest of honour was former Head Girl, Eilidh Bass.

Eilidh, who graduated in 2012 with A Levels in Biology, Chemistry and 3D Art, entertained us with her memories of the “fantastic foundation and opportunities” the school provided to her and her younger sisters, Hannah and Maggie, who also attended Tormead. She spoke about her career progression, and it was fascinating to learn more about how her graduation project for her studies in Performance Costume and Design at the University of Edinburgh was a springboard for her later career. For this fortuitous project, Eilidh created two “amazingly crazy” costumes for children’s TV programme, ‘The Magic Roundabout’, with a dress that featured a mechanical revolving roundabout. This design, in turn, led to her further developing an interest in children’s television, and she now works as for Ragdoll Productions, an international award-winning independent children’s television production company.

We would like to thank Eilidh for her memorable speech, her kind words and uplifting messages of encouragement to our Upper Sixth Leavers.  It was a delightful Prize Giving event, and one which will be remembered fondly by all.
