Main focus: Strengthened safeguarding & welfare rules for all providers (separate frameworks for childminders vs group/school settings).
Recruitment - References must be obtained before employment; update safeguarding policies.
Absence monitoring - Prompt follow-up on unexplained absences; attendance policy required; more than two emergency contacts advised.
Paediatric First Aid - Mandatory for all trainees in staffing ratios; training must be from approved providers.
Eating safety - Close supervision during meals to prevent choking/allergy incidents.
Toileting & nappy changing - Balance privacy with supervision.
Whistleblowing - Written policy with internal & external reporting routes.
Safeguarding training - Annex C sets minimum standards; refreshment is required at least every 2 years (annual refreshers are encouraged).
Terminology - "Lead practitioner" replaced by Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL).
For group/school providers only:
Experience-Based Route (EBR) - Allows experienced, unqualified practitioners to count in ratios.
Reception Baseline Assessment - Updated with new digital elements for 2025/26.
